DS-160 photo rejected? Common reasons and how to fix them

A DS-160 photo is usually rejected for one of these reasons: it is not square or not between 600×600 and 1200×1200 pixels; the file is larger than 240 KB or so heavily compressed that it exceeds a 20:1 compression ratio; the head (chin to top of hair) is not 50–69% of the image height or the eyes are not 56–69% up from the bottom; glasses are worn; or the photo was edited with filters or AI. Retake in even light against a plain white wall, crop to the head-size rules and export a JPEG between roughly 54 KB and 240 KB.

File and size problems (the upload fails)

The State Department's digital image requirements: square (height equals width), minimum 600×600 and maximum 1200×1200 pixels, colour (24 bits per pixel, sRGB), JPEG, 240 KB or less.

The compression ratio must be 20:1 or less. For a 600×600 photo that means the JPEG should not be smaller than about 54 KB — over-compressing a photo to squeeze it under the limit can also cause a rejection.

Head size and position

On the digital template, the head from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin must be 50% to 69% of the image height, and the eye line 56% to 69% of the image height measured from the bottom. A selfie taken too close usually fails the head-size rule; one taken from too far away fails it the other way.

Appearance rules

No eyeglasses (unless you have a medical reason and a doctor's note). Neutral expression or a natural smile with the mouth closed, both eyes open, facing the camera directly.

White or off-white background with no shadows, texture or lines. No hats or head coverings except for religious or medical reasons.

Do not edit the photo to change your appearance — filters, retouching and AI edits lead to rejections.

Fixing it quickly

Retake the photo in daylight facing a window, with the white wall about half a metre behind you so no shadow falls on it. Keep your head level and remove glasses.

Upload it to pixtidy's US visa photo maker: it measures your head and eye line, crops to the template, checks each rule and exports a JPEG inside the file-size window — before you pay.
