What it doesn't check

Follow these rules yourself, even if all ten checks pass:

  • Glasses and head coverings
  • Whether the photo was taken in the last 6 months
  • Whether the photo was edited. The State Department asks for the original, unchanged photo, with no changes made with software, apps, filters or AI.

Frequently asked questions

Is the passport photo check free?

Yes. You see every result before paying, without signing up. If you want the cropped, correctly sized US passport file, it costs $9.99 digital or $12.99 with a 4×6 print sheet.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. Your photo is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

Does passing guarantee acceptance?

No. The issuing authority makes the final decision, and you still need to follow the rules the checker can't assess. If a photo our checker marked as passing is rejected by the issuing authority, we refund in full.

Will pixtidy fix my background or retouch my face?

No. Failed checks come with retake advice, such as how to fix your lighting and wall. The paid file is cropped and sized to the official specification, without background replacement or face retouching.
