Schengen visa photo requirements (35×45 mm) and how to make one online

A Schengen visa photo is 35×45 mm. The face, from the tip of the chin to the top of the head, must take up 70–80% of the photo — about 32–36 mm — on a plain, light, evenly lit background (neutral grey is ideal). Take a front-facing photo, crop it to 35×45 mm with the head at that size, and print it on photo paper at a kiosk.

Size and head position

The European Commission's ICAO photo guidance and the German Foreign Office's visa photo instructions describe a 35×45 mm photo in which the face takes up 70–80% of the height, which corresponds to 32–36 mm from chin to crown. The face must be centred.

German consular guidance also asks for a print resolution of at least 600 dpi. pixtidy exports the digital file at 827×1063 pixels (35×45 mm at 600 dpi).

Background, expression and glasses

The background should be plain and light, in one colour — the German instructions recommend neutral grey. It does not have to be white.

Keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed and look straight at the camera. Glasses must not have tinted lenses or reflections, and frames must not cover the eyes. Head coverings are only allowed for religious reasons.

Printing

Buy the 4×6 print sheet on pixtidy and print it as a normal 4×6 photo at a pharmacy or photo kiosk, then cut out one photo. Each sheet holds several 35×45 mm photos.

Individual Schengen countries' consulates may add their own rules for online applications, so check the website of the country you apply to.
