Australian visa photo requirements for ImmiAccount uploads

For an Australian visa application in ImmiAccount, upload a recent, unedited colour JPEG between 70 KB and 3.5 MB — ideally about 1200×1600 pixels — showing your head and shoulders against a plain neutral or light grey background that contrasts with your face. Remove glasses unless you need them for medical reasons, and do not upload a scan of a printed photo or a photo of a photo.

What Home Affairs asks for

The ImmiAccount photograph help page asks for a JPEG between 70 KB and 3.5 MB and recommends around 1200 pixels wide by 1600 pixels high. The photo must be unedited: do not remove the background, moles, wrinkles, scars or red eyes.

Background: plain neutral or light grey, contrasting with your face. Glasses off unless worn for medical reasons (then clear lenses with no glare). Religious head coverings are fine if your full face is visible.

A scan of a photo, or a photograph of a printed photo, is not acceptable.

Head size

The visa page gives no exact head size. The Australian citizenship photo rules use a head of 32–36 mm (chin to crown) on a 35–40 × 45–50 mm photo, so pixtidy frames the head at roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of the photo height — clearly visible, with some space above the head.

Taking it

Stand in front of a light grey or neutral wall in daylight, have someone take the photo at eye level from about 1–1.5 m, and keep a neutral expression. pixtidy crops it to 1200×1600, checks background, lighting and focus, and exports a JPEG inside the 70 KB–3.5 MB window.
